On 19 March 2019 the European Commission launched the RESponsible island prize competition, funded under Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation programme.

This Prize aims to award islands with innovative and sustainable local renewable energy production for use in electricity, heating, cooling and transport. The three winners will receive a cash prize of €500,000, €250,000 and €100,000, respectively.

The contest is open to islands located within the territory of an EU Member State (including Overseas Countries and Territories linked to them) or countries associated to Horizon 2020 and to any legal entity or group of legal entities representing the respective island.

The deadline for applications is 29 September 2020 (unsuccessful contestants from the first year competition in 2019 need to submit a new application, if they wish to compete also in the second year competition in 2020).
