The European Union is committed to transforming its transport and energy systems as part of a future low carboneconomy. Fuel Cell and Hydrogen (FCH) technologies hold great promise for energy and transport applications from the perspective of meeting Europe's energy, environmental and economic challenges.

The Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) is a unique public private partnership supporting research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities in fuel cell and hydrogen energy technologies in Europe. Its aim is to accelerate the market introduction of these technologies, realising their potential as an instrument in achieving a carbon-lean energy system. The FCH JU Programme is one of the toool to achive these targets. It is structured around two research and innovation pillars dedicated to Transportation and Energy Systems. Overarching projects integrating both transport and energy technologies and a cluster of cross-cutting research activities complement these two pillars.

Topics supported under energy pillar:

  • Fuel cells for power and combined heat & power generation
  • Hydrogen production and distribution
  • Hydrogen for renewable energy storage (inc. blending in natural gas grid)

Topics supported under transport pillar:

  • Road vehicles
  • Non-road mobile vehicles and machinery
  • Refuelling infrastructure
  • Maritime, rail and aviation applications
